The Egyptian container handling company (ECHCO) started in 1998 in ADABYA port. In the mid 1999 (The Egyptian container handling company, ECHCO) changed its name to be (Sokhna port development company, SPDC) which succeeded to sign a 25 year concession agreement with the Egyptian government to operate the port of north el Sokhna. 

In October, 2002 the port began commercial operations, becoming the first fully private port operating in Egypt. It provides a deep water facility able to handle Post-Panamax vessels serving the Cairo area as well as the Suez special economic zone (SSEZ) In 2008 the Sokhna port joined the family of DP world, becoming one of many ports around the world operating under the name of DP world. 

DP World is a leading enabler of global trade and an integral part of the supply chain. DP World operates multiple yet related businesses – from marine and inland terminals, maritime services, logistics and ancillary services to technology-driven trade solutions. DP World has a portfolio of 77 operating marine and inland terminals supported by over 50 related businesses in 40 countries across six continents with a significant presence in both high-growth and mature markets. We aim to be essential to the bright future of global trade, ensuring everything we do has a long-lasting positive impact on economies and society. 

DP World aims to enhance customers' supply chain efficiency by effectively managing container, bulk and other terminal cargo. Nearly 9000 hectare industrial development zone being developed adjacent to the port. The port benefits from a strategic location close to the southern entrance of the Suez Canal where it can become a gateway for cargo between Egypt and Asia as well as east Africa.
