Working with product and engineering

I was travelling the world, when Covid forced me to return home way too early. So instead of exploring different countries, I became a babysitter to my nephews, spent time with sick relatives and supported friends in the restaurant industry with website & menu designs. All things considered, time well spent after all.

The Digital Garage was Innogy's in-house product development studio set up to drive digital innovation across the company. I’ve joined the Garage Berlin as the first creative hire and together with the Business Development Lead started to build up a team and office from scratch. My core responsibilities revolved around…

• Independently defining, managing and executing the UX research & UX design process
• UX strategy, conceptual planning & creative direction for various international projects (B2B, B2C, B2E)
• Schedule, budget & people planning for projects as well as client & stakeholder management (w/ AM & PM)
• Client & project acquisition, showcasing projects and representing the Garage & Innogy at events
• Facilitating all kinds of workshops, trainings and design sprints and rapid-prototyping the solutions
• Mentoring of employees at junior and intermediate level, guiding trainees and interns
• Actively driving recruitment and team development
• Impact Circle Lead according to the Holacracy model of the Garage

Just Eat Takeaway.com is a leading global online food delivery marketplace, connecting consumers and restaurants through its platform in 23 countries. While at Takeaway, I was part of different cross-functional teams (website redesign, app, conversion) working on B2C and B2E projects. My day-to-day work allowed me to cover the whole design process from research to data analysis to UX & UI design.

• Applying UX research & UX design methods to different features, products and channels incl. persona creation, journey maps, user flows, IA & sitemaps, prototypes, interviews, surveys, testings..
• Behavioral data analysis using Crazy Egg, Hotjar, Google Analytics...
• Concept & UI design for A/B tests, evaluation using Optimizely
• Building UX awareness and promoting evidence-based product development
• Supporting the documentation and establishment of design guidelines across departments
• Facilitating design workshops with different departments
• Co-hosting UX seminars at the TU Berlin (project examples: frictionless survey design for funnel exits; the role of ratings in the customer’s decision making process; how food pictures influence the UX)

I joined the HMKW for 3 semesters to give lectures for bachelor students of Media and Business Psychology. My lecture course covered topics like:

• Research methods in behavioral psychology, consumer research and (neuro-)economics
• Cognitive theories of decision making processes exemplified by risk analysis, investment behavior, saving behavior..
• Behavioral psychology theories focusing on shared economy, crowdfunding, tax compliance..
• Psychological, social and cultural determinants of consumer behavior
• Customer experience with focus on branding, packaging, price perception
• Advertisement as a means of mass communication

Associated with the Department of Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics

During my time at the TU Berlin, I was giving seminars at the department’s usability lab that combined theory & practice, focusing on user experience models and qualitative & quantitative methods to assess usability and user experience. Apart from that, I assisted with the lecture courses “Cognitive Ergonomics & Usability Engineering” and “Psychology for Engineers” and the set up of a usability wiki.

Associated with the Department of Organizational and Industrial Psychology, I was planning and conducting a study to validate a smartphone-based measurement of sleepiness-related posturographic information.

Associated with the Department of Experimental Psychology.

As my team was set up as a start up in the bureaucratic context of a university, my role was a mix of everything: UX Researcher, Psychologist and Project Lead. I've worked on industry and research projects, generally focussing on measuring and/or improving the user experience of services or products using a mix of classic psychological, psychophysiological and modern user-centered design methods.

• Comparing the UX and cognitive load of different driving assistants (BMW Group)
• Measuring the UX of in-car operating systems using a multi-method approach (BMW Group)
• Measuring the UX of toiletries (BASF)
• Psychophysiological effects of different lighting scenarios (Osram AG)
• Speech signal-based sleepiness detection to develop an automated sleepiness detection system for transportation (DFG funded)

• Questionnaire construction and statistical analysis for a UX study on hair products (BASF)
• Quantitative data analysis for a study validating a scent diffuser system, later implemented in the Renault Zoe (Renault)
• Conducting a study to measure the UX of body care products (Kneipp Group)

During my time at the Institute of Physiology, I was overseeing advanced laboratory exercises for medical and dental students: “Cardiovascular System: Peripheral Circulation and Regulation”, “Respiratory Physiology” and “Somatovisceral Sensory System”.
