OpenInvest is a San Francisco based startup that is offering tools that allow you to do values based investing (ESG). My role here was to redesign and improve some of the flows of our software tools as well as design a brand new onboarding experience from scratch. Moreover, we offer custom reports for external clients, designing that report and making it modular was also part of my responsibilities.

Our clients at IBM have been mainly in telco, finance and insurance industries. My responsibilities at IBM ranged from coming up with a brand new design concept and applying it to multiple different platforms (iOS, Android, Mobile Web, Desktop) to coming up with a new value proposition for a product. I have experience in creating design language systems from scratch and coordinating with the entire team to execute them. I have also been heavily involved in customer facing activities like preparing presentations, storytelling, creating content and visuals both digitally and in print, project handover, strategy and workshop facilitation.

In addition to my daily visual design responsibilities, I like to organize culture building and knowledge sharing activities. As part of this, together with two other colleagues of mine we established the Enterprise Design Thinking Istanbul Chapter. Our aim was to provide a point of contact for all IBM employees in Turkey and in other nearby countries where they can come to us with any design thinking related needs. 

Lastly, along with a colleague of mine we established monthly Research Guilds. Our aim here was to provide a platform for IBMers around the world to come together and share their knowledge and experience around research. Each month we had a presenter talk to us about a new research related topic. (i.e. methods used, case studies, new research tools)

During my time at Agency Look, I worked on a project for Çelik Motor which is the automotive company owned by the Anadolu Group. They wanted to develop a new website to buy and sell cars. This system would include the selling and buying of used cars as well as non-used cars. We conducted a very thorough user research which included interviews with 3 car galleries and 3 car dealerships, 20 users that bought or sold cars and 20 users who are thinking about buying or selling a car. We analyzed this research to come up with a new experience for buying and selling cars which would also try to solve some of the existing problems of the industry such as trust issues and fake car plates etc.

Tomorrow-Lab is a firm that provides design and engineering consultancy to other companies. During my internship, I worked on projects where we helped startups develop their products and help them with their product strategy and preparation for market launch. Projects I worked on included designing a smart light bulb that worked as a speaker as well as a smart object that you could connect with your other devices and social media platforms. Another project that I worked on was a wearable tech project where the aim was to design a wristband that parents would give to their kids so that if they were distressed while swimming, they could send a signal to their parents and get help. The wrist band would connect to an app and the parent could use it to communicate with and locate their kids. Its aim was to prevent children from drowning in the water. 

During this time, I also worked on my own project. Anti-Flage was a pattern generation method that is intended to make bikers and skateboarders become more visible to help reduce accidents. It draws inspiration from natures warning mechanism called aposematism, which works as the opposite of camouflage. The method allows you to create a custom pattern that will allow you to become the most visible on your specific bike route. It works with an app that you can either upload images to or connect to Google maps to use street views. It than generates a pattern based on these images. This pattern is than available for purchase in the form of three products: a t-shirt, a wristband and a hoodie.

At Ecco Design I was mostly working on one big project which was for SC Johnson. They wanted to launch a new product mainly targeted for Brazil and Indonesia. This product was for avoiding mosquitoes from entering the house, it ejected an odor which spread in the house to repel the mosquitoes. The products effect lasted for a week and it was a liquid infused paper that they manufactured themselves. Our brief was to design a product that solved the users needs and made use of the design opportunities. Hence we ended up referencing their cultural aesthetic and tried to use this opportunity to turn this product into a multi-functional object that they could also perceive as decoration in their homes and wouldn't associate it with all the stigmas that came with having mosquitoes in their homes in their cultures and instead feel proud to have a protected and safe home. 

Other projects included designing VR experiences for Magic Leap and their new gaming platforms. We were coming up with new concepts of interacting in the VR environment and how to reinterpret the avatar concept accordingly.

I started working with Alvaro as an intern. He has a consultancy that mostly designs kitchenware and small table top products. I helped him come up with new ideas and make 3D models of these, render them and create presentations for them to be presented to the clients. I also managed his Kickstarter campaign that he launched for a wine glass that he designed. This responsibility included taking photos and videos to promote the product, designing awards to be given to the supporters and managing the social media accounts.

During my time at Token, I helped them develop and manufacture their line of furniture. I learned about how to design for manufacturing methods and how to create a group of different objects that make a whole. I also had the chance to learn glass manufacturing techniques, metal manufacturing, CNC and welding methods.
