FreeBalance develops and implements smart Public Financial Management (PFM) systems that combat corruption by enhancing transparency, promoting good governance and implementing sound fiscal management. Headquartered in Canada, FreeBalance has customers in more than 25 countries around the world.

I look after FreeBalance's strategic and operational marketing communications right across the marketing mix, including corporate communications, branding, content creation, events, digital marketing, lead generation, press and internal communications. This is a global role, covering both prospect pipeline across developed, developing and fragile economies, and enhancing existing relationships. I am charged with supporting business development across clients, partners and resellers.

Since coming into post I've audited marketing operations, identified new strategic needs and begun developing standard operating procedures for activities such as new client launch, new country activity, new course launch etc.

I absolutely love working with colleagues is so many different countries, though managing all the time zones does sometimes boggle my brain!

NHS NSS is a national health board which includes a diverse range of services for the NHS in Scotland.

I led a team of 26 marketing, media and design professionals. Key to this role was identifying the need for, and then delivering, transformational change, which I did through focusing on strategic communications, delivered via a revolutionised service model. 

Key activities in this role included:
- Developing and implementing a new Communications Strategy, ensuring high quality communications, reducing cost and increasing brand reputation. 
- Redesign of the MarComms service, focusing on performance, automation and increased customer engagement. 
- Engaging and influencing a broad range of senior stakeholders, including Government sponsors, partner organisations, and internal senior leadership.
- Providing communications and brand leadership, influencing NSS plans across high-profile organisational priorities, such as COVID-19 response, public inquiry engagement, etc.
- Developing opportunities for income-generating projects, to ensure effective communications support for high-profile national health programmes  (including negotiating budgets and service levels).
- Overall responsibility for reputation management, including advising on high profile or contentious issues, and managing media, public and stakeholder engagement.
- Senior strategic input to communications across NHS Scotland, working with senior leaders of NHS boards and Scottish Government to create impactful communications which achieve health improvements.

The achievement I'm proudest of in this role was using data to secure comms a seat at the table in significant strategic discussions, by making sure the value and importance of the marketing communications professional skillset is evidenced. This also led to increased performance and efficiency by bringing together a number of smaller, independent strands of work together into powerful reputational enhancement programmes.

My remit in this role was to drive growth in global student recruitment by making improvements across the full sales cycle from initial awareness to admission. This included leadership and hands-on management of on- and offline marketing, events, customer journeys, product development and market research.

Key responsibilities:
- Delivering against ambitious growth targets through new strategic marketing, recruitment and conversion activity.
- Developing a new marketing strategy, repositioning the institution to ensure optimum differentiation in local and international markets.
- Delivering maximum ROI for all opportunities and activities, through the development of creative approaches underpinned by clear objectives, and in-depth data analysis and evaluation of all projects.
- Overseeing the management of a wide network of international agents, leading a culture shift within the team to a business-to-business and performance-driven approach.
- Working collaboratively with academic colleagues to develop strategic university partnerships, creating a pipeline of prospective students and delivering the aims of the university’s Internationalisation Strategy.
- Driving a culture shift in the importance of customer experience for prospective students, delivering continuous improvement through critical analysis of processes and barriers to conversion.
- Leading strategically and commercially significant projects for the university, including setting tuition fees.
- Reshaping marketing materials and events to be more successful in recruiting students.

Proudest moments:
- Achieving enrolment targets in 2017/18, and exceeding targets for Scottish postgraduate and international recruitment in 2018/19  - resulting in an extra £1.5m worth of income generated.
- Redeveloping existing internal processes to maximise performance and customer experience from day one.
- Devising Directorate, team and individual KPI models which better support performance monitoring and forecasting.

This diverse role covered strategy development, brand reputation enhancement, and driving student recruitment. 

Strategy
I worked on a new Marketing, Communications and Engagement Strategy for the University, focusing on driving academic reputation through strategic, targeted and data-evidenced marketing activities. This involved international market research, consultation, competitive analysis, stakeholder engagement and pitches for additional resources. I then successfully pitched for and onboarded seven new staff to implement the strategy.

I led the development of a new value proposition for the university, “Beyond the Classroom: Skills and Experience that Matter”, which was tested with domestic and international audiences and was then rolled out at all levels internally.

Strategy implementation
As well as driving a new content marketing focus within the university, I led a number of game-changing projects which helped to deliver against both the Marketing, Communications and Engagement Strategy and the university’s strategy to 2020. One example was market research in 13 international territories which allowed me to evidence the need to completely redevelop the university’s approach to recruitment materials and better align our on- and offline materials, as well as act as an ambassador for data-driven decision making. As well as delivering excellent user feedback, the new style of print prospectuses was shortlisted for a Heist Award.

I led the redevelopment of the university’s website, which was rebuilt from the ground up on a new CMS, and developed a new governance model.

I delivered improvements to university recruitment events, ensuring open and applicant days successfully converted prospects to enrolments.

Management
I oversaw a cross-functional team of 18, covering brand/recruitment marketing, in-house creative, and a content and digital team. I also mentored early-stage marketers in other departments.

In addition to employed roles in strategic marketing and communications I have also supported a number of businesses of all sizes with strategic marketing and communications consultancy. 

This has involved developing marketing and sales strategies from the ground up, designing campaigns which deliver results, training teams, creating content, media relations, SEO, data analysis and creating business performance evaluation metrics, and more.
