About Daniel van der Spuy
Senior Product Designer at By Miles
Hello! I’m a senior product designer and engineer. My focus is using research to get to the bottom of real user problems, and relying on data to design for the full diversity of how people think, live, and navigate the world.
Creating true product delight goes deeper than nice layouts – we must design for core jobs to be done so a tricky task feels entirely natural. (In a way that leaves service users questioning why it didn’t work that way all along!)
In my day job, I love unpicking messy problems, championing accessibility, and creating the safe, objective spaces where teams can sharpen how they design together.
My adopted mantra is “strong opinions, loosely held.” I believe in the importance of going into stakeholder meetings with well-backed reasoning, but an openness to other perspectives and expertise. If you allow yourself to be guided by curiosity and objectivity – not personal assumptions, you’ll create psychological safety and create an efficient, collaborative culture wherever you work.
I’m here to help you with any discipline, technical or soft skill our field touches. Figma variables, building composable context-based React components, effective handoff techniques, dealing with conflicts, showing leadership, prioritising product opportunities – I’m all ears 👂
