I lead Platform, Data Engineering and Quality functions at a sustainability focussed SaaS company. Before that, 15 years in software testing and quality engineering — Tester through to Senior Leadership, now Engineering Management. Technical skill gets you promoted; it doesn't automatically make you good at leading people, and most of us learn that the hard way.
I mentor engineers and QA professionals stepping into leadership — first-time managers still finding their footing, people building a case for quality or process investment their org doesn't yet see the value in, and anyone trying to lead a multi-discipline team without a playbook. Recent examples of what I've actually done: restructured a team spanning five disciplines, built onboarding programmes that get new hires to production-ready code inside two weeks, and made the case internally for AI-driven workflow tooling.
