About Martin Bulmer

Product Marketing Manager at Optimal Workshop

Martin has been working in the digital industry since before the web started (he once told the editor of the British Weekly Telegraph that there was this thing called ‘the Internet’ he might like to consider putting his paper on). Starting his career at BT Research Laboratories Human Factors Unit, he worked on projects as diverse as the interaction design of collaborative virtual environments, the world’s first TV on demand service, the development of interaction design standards for BT products and the specification for the stripy red and yellow tents you see on streets that telephone engineers sit inside and drink tea. After leaving BT, Martin spent the next ten or so years working in media, web and usability agencies in the UK and New Zealand. Along the way he has learnt a lot about user research, research operations, interaction design, information architecture, and how to fit research into the agile lifecycle. Martin has run workshops and given talks at UX Australia, UX New Zealand, UX Hong Kong and elsewhere, on subjects as diverse as Google Sprints, Content Strategy & IA and Research and Design Of Complex Systems.

As a researcher at Optimal Workshop he is helping build the future Information Architecture tools that people who do research and content specialists deserve.

“Martin excels in both his expertise and teaching abilities. His guidance proved invaluable in refining my approach to user interviews, pinpointing areas for improvement. Martin is not only a great individual but also provides positive and constructive criticism.”

Joshua Bates, UI/UX Designer at General Assembly

“I had a mentorship session today with Martin, and I'm thoroughly impressed. He is a very thoughtful individual who genuinely tries to share his knowledge and always has your best interests at heart. He generously shared valuable resources and provided me with the most in-depth feedback on my case study. I'm grateful for his time and expertise.”
