Conducting effective customer interviews

My main role at RS consists of working closely with the ‘Find’ team that involves the search and browse phase of the user journey (includes taxonomy, navigation, filters, search results, header, footer etc).

I work closely with UX designers, product owners and business analysts in helping them identify user needs, behaviours, evaluating the live site and design concepts at different stages of development, implementing findings and presenting insights to stakeholders.

One of my leading projects is the PACE variants project (new product data model) that will provide flexibility to how products are grouped into ranges. As part of this project, formative and evaluative research have been conducted with B2B and B2C participants.

Notable accomplishments - I have introduced and implemented:

> An In-house rapid testing methodology for early stage/low fidelity design concepts

> A quarterly longitudinal study across the customer journey

> A research repository and technical scenarios library

At TUI, I work closely with 9 agile teams composed of UX designers, UI and Project Managers across multiple sectors of the business e.g Cruise, Book, Search etc. To help them conduct research to find user needs, evaluate user experiences at different stages of development.

I handle projects at different phases of the project life cycle (from discovery to optimisation) and the user journey (discovery, navigation, search, filtering results, product pages, basket and checkout) using the most appropriate methodology to answer the research objectives such as Gorilla testing, 3-12-1 (Rapid) testing, desirability, moderated/un-moderated usability testing, lab testing, card sorting, tree testing, emotional response testing and click testing.

Leading end to end projects (moderated and unmoderated) for numerous big name clients across multiple industries such as commerce, travel, insurance, health and government (lead and completed a total of 32 projects between February 2018 to December 2019). Projects that consist of client briefs, test design, analysing and generating reports for different research methodologies (usability, card sorting, tree testing, click tests, A/B testing, baselining, best practices and competitor benchmarking).

Capable of analysing the results and providing meaningful insights that answer the hypothesis and research questions. Reporting findings that include problem areas, categorising issue severity, and providing realistic recommendations.

Although my experience is based primarily in qualitative user research, I’m involved in a variety of projects that consisted of a mix of quantitative and a qualitative methods.

The role involved recruitment & managing of the in-house panel (for unmoderated, moderated and lab testing) across five core countries (UK, US, France, Germany & Netherlands) and third party recruitment for the more niche demographics for non core countries such as Japan, China, Brazil, Thailand and Mexico.

Aspects of in-house recruitment involved creating email campaigns, scripting screening surveys for larger or multi-client projects to find the right candidates. Testers were managed through quality control on audition videos and providing email support for technical, account and overall enquiries.

Third party recruitment involved reaching out to contacts in international recruitment companies, providing the participant requirements, arranging test script translation, making sure that the sessions (moderated and unmoderated) ran successfully then arranging for video transcription.

Facebook tester engagement was increased by over 60% (likes & comments) and the number of lifetime likes was doubled. Engaging and informative content was written for the monthly newsletter and the creation and maintaining of the tester knowledge base.

Over time my curiosity for UX research began to grow and I started assisting the UX team whenever possible by taking on tasks that involved quantitative result analysis, assisting in remote moderate test sessions and scripting test scripts.

Luckily the opportunity to do some hands-on UX analysis arose, which involved analysing test videos, creating tags and presenting my findings to the researcher in the form of a detailed summary to later be used in a report.
