The National Youth Council is made up of 10 members selected and chosen on the basis of academic preparation, professional experience and the potential for influencing in the Italian territory.
The National Youth Council is the consultative body which is entrusted with the representation of young people in dialogue with the institutions for any discussion on policies affecting the world of youth, established by Law no. 145/2018.
The Department for Youth Policies and Civil Service represents the primary interlocutor of the National Youth Council and follows its activities.
The CNG is a member of the European Youth Forum (European Youth Forum in acronym YFJ) which represents the interests of young Europeans in international institutions.

The Council has several tasks:
- It can be heard by the President of the Council of Ministers or by the delegated political authority, on matters and policies that have an impact on the younger generations
- it expresses opinions and formulates proposals on regulatory acts initiated by the Government on matters of interest to young people
- collaborates with public administrations by developing studies and preparing reports on the condition of young people, useful for defining policies for young people
- undertake to recognize and promote dialogue between institutions and youth organizations
- promotes the active citizenship of young people and, to this end, supports the activity of youth associations, promoting the exchange of good practices and increasing the networks between them;
- facilitates the training and development of youth advisory bodies at local level
- participates in European and international association forums by encouraging communication,  
- relations and exchanges between youth organizations of different countries
- promotes and supports projects of interest to young people
- favors the meeting of youth organizations by supporting common projects in line with the aims and fundamental principles of the Council.
