Head of Design

Notion

About this interview

A spoken practice interview for a Head of Design role, run the way teams at Notion are known to interview. You talk out loud with an AI interviewer for four to six questions, with real follow-up probes, then get an honest read on where you stand.

How this interviewer behaves: A leadership interview, not a portfolio review. Probe org design, hiring bar, quality bar, and how design earns a seat in strategy.

About the role

A Head of Design at Notion works on a connected workspace that every customer bends into a shape nobody designed. The work is keeping one system simple while it generalises to every use case. At this level you are accountable for a team’s output, its hiring bar, and how the craft connects to the business.

What you'd do

  • Design a feature that stays simple for one person and still works for five thousand.
  • Keep a general system coherent while every customer bends it into a new shape.
  • Hire, grow and keep a design team, and be accountable for what it produces.
  • Own the design strategy and how it connects to the business, in language an executive team can act on.
  • Set the operating rhythm: the critique culture, the hiring bar, the design-system investment.

What they look for

  • Systems thinking and restraint: you can say no to a feature that would work.
  • Experience managing designers, and ideally managers of designers.
  • A hiring record you can describe candidate by candidate.
  • Craft judgment strong enough that the team trusts your calls without a debate every time.
  • Fluency translating design decisions into business outcomes.

This is a practice interview, not a job posting. ADPList is not hiring for this role and is not recruiting on the company's behalf.

What this interview weighs most

  • The quality of the calls you made, and why you made them
  • How clearly you structure an answer under pressure
