About the role
A Product Designer at Tesla works on vehicle software, energy products, and interfaces people use while moving at speed. The deadline is fixed, the process is thin, and safety is not a tradeoff. At this level you are expected to own a feature end to end and be trusted with the craft, while direction is still set with you rather than by you.
What you'd do
- Design something a person uses while driving, and defend every element you kept.
- Ship inside a fixed deadline with very little process around you.
- Own features end to end: framing the problem, exploring, specifying, and holding the details that survive engineering review.
- Work daily with a product manager and engineers, and hold the quality line when the schedule pushes back.
- Put the work in front of people — usability sessions, experiments, instrumentation — and change your mind when the evidence says so.
What they look for
- Speed under constraint, and the nerve to defend a decision without cover.
- Around three years designing software that shipped, not concepts.
- Two or three projects you can walk end to end, including the parts that went wrong.
- Fluency inside a component library rather than around it.
- The ability to write and talk about tradeoffs, not only to show final screens.
