About the role
A Product Manager at Duolingo works on the most-downloaded education app in the world, where a lesson has to survive both a learner and an A/B test. Engagement and actual learning are not the same metric, and only one of them is easy to move. At this level you are expected to own a feature end to end and be trusted with the craft, while direction is still set with you rather than by you.
What you'd do
- Read the case where retention is up and lesson completion is down, and act on it.
- Run an experimentation programme where most of your good ideas lose.
- Own an area: define the problem, write the spec, and ship it with design and engineering.
- Choose the one metric that decides whether the launch worked, and say so plainly when it does not move.
- Cut scope deliberately, and be explicit about what you are not doing.
What they look for
- Statistical literacy and the humility to let the test decide.
- Around three years shipping software, with a launch you can describe in real detail.
- Comfort with data: you can pull the numbers yourself, and you know when they are lying to you.
- Writing clear enough that a decision survives without you in the room.
- Judgment about when to move fast and when being wrong is too expensive.
