About the role
A UX Researcher at Duolingo works on the most-downloaded education app in the world, where a lesson has to survive both a learner and an A/B test. Engagement and actual learning are not the same metric, and only one of them is easy to move. At this level you are expected to own a feature end to end and be trusted with the craft, while direction is still set with you rather than by you.
What you'd do
- Study whether gamification is teaching people, or just keeping them busy.
- Separate the metrics that measure engagement from the ones that measure learning.
- Run studies end to end: the question, the method, recruiting, analysis, and the readout.
- Turn findings into a decision the team actually makes, not a deck that gets archived.
- Work with data science to triangulate what people say against what they do.
What they look for
- Rigour about proxy metrics, and the nerve to say the number everyone likes is the wrong number.
- Around two to three years of applied product research, in-house or agency.
- Method fluency — interviews, usability, diary studies, surveys — and the judgment to choose one under a deadline.
- The discipline to state your confidence honestly, including when the sample is too small to support the recommendation.
- Writing that a busy product manager will actually read.
