About the role
A Senior UX Researcher at OpenAI works on ChatGPT, the API, and the products built directly on frontier models. The underlying capability changes underneath you, sometimes in the middle of a quarter. At this level you are expected to set direction for an area, bring partner teams with you, and be right often enough that people stop asking for the reasoning.
What you'd do
- Evaluate a product whose behaviour changes every time the model does.
- Build research methods for capabilities that have no precedent to compare against.
- Own the research strategy for an area, including deciding what is not worth studying.
- Change a roadmap with evidence, and defend the conclusion when it is unwelcome.
- Raise the bar: mentor researchers, review study designs, and build panels and infrastructure other people reuse.
What they look for
- Methodological creativity, and epistemic honesty about what your study can and cannot show.
- Five or more years of product research, with specific examples of work that changed a product decision.
- Rigour about causality, sampling and bias — and the ability to explain it to people who are not researchers.
- Comfort delivering findings a senior stakeholder does not want.
- The skill to turn qualitative depth and quantitative scale into one coherent story.
