About the role
A Product Manager at Tesla works on vehicle software, energy products, and interfaces people use while moving at speed. The deadline is fixed, the process is thin, and safety is not a tradeoff. At this level you are expected to own a feature end to end and be trusted with the craft, while direction is still set with you rather than by you.
What you'd do
- Ship in six weeks or not at all, and make the cut list in week one.
- Own a safety-critical surface where the cost of being wrong is not a metric.
- Own an area: define the problem, write the spec, and ship it with design and engineering.
- Choose the one metric that decides whether the launch worked, and say so plainly when it does not move.
- Cut scope deliberately, and be explicit about what you are not doing.
What they look for
- Urgency, directness, and comfort in a low-process environment.
- Around three years shipping software, with a launch you can describe in real detail.
- Comfort with data: you can pull the numbers yourself, and you know when they are lying to you.
- Writing clear enough that a decision survives without you in the room.
- Judgment about when to move fast and when being wrong is too expensive.
